Alessandro Felisi's Herbarium (FER-FEL) - Version 1.0

The Herbarium of Alessandro Felisi, a doctor and florist from Ferrara, is the most significant historical collection within the University of Ferrara Herbarium. The Felisi Herbarium is the result of numerous personal collections (approx. 3,000 taxa) and collaborations with Italian and foreign botanists from the first half of the 19th century. The taxa collected and identified by Felisi represent the wild flora of the main habitats in the Ferrara area, although they also include plants cultivated in the University’s Botanical Garden and in various gardens (including his own). Many specimens collected in the early 20th century by other botanists, in particular Pietro Revedin, Angelo Ferioli (author of contributions to Schedae ad Floram Italicam Exsiccatam), Caro Massalongo and Augusto Béguinot, subsequently became an integral part of the Herbarium. Following the most recent reorganisation and review in 2008, the Felisi collection now comprises a total of 9,214 specimens grouped into 53 bundles, divided by family.

Ercole Graziadei's Herbarium (FER-GRA) - Version 1.0

The herbarium of Ercole Graziadei, Count of Massenzatica, is an early 19th century collection purchased in 2024 by private individuals in Codigoro for its great historical value, excellent state of preservation, and, not least, the frequent occurrence of collection notes of scientific value for the Ferrara area (specimens also from the Ferrara Botanical Garden). The collection consists of four small bound volumes, in which the pages containing small, numbered plant specimens, protected by paper folds, alternate with a rich textual treatment, where each number leads to a detailed description with ecological notes, commentaries, references to published texts or plates, and, indeed, often precise collection localities. It includes specimens collected by other authors, including Antonio Francesco Campana, and overall, various handwriting styles are recognizable, along with evidence of a "stratified" constitution, likely spanning at least a decade (specimens dated 1827 and 1834 have been glimpsed).

The Herbarium of Antonio Campana, a brilliant professor of botany at the University of Ferrara between 1700 and 1800, consists of spontaneous plants mainly from the Ferrara area. The Herbarium includes 4,414 plants in a good state of preservation, classified according to Linnaeus' system. The plants are not fixed with glue or pins but are loose on the pages and, ungortunately, there is little information available about where and when they were collected.

A complete list of specimens found in the FI-HB mycological collection. These include fungi mainly collected by Beccari himself between 1865 and 1878 in Australasia, namely in Indonesia (Sumatra and Maluku), Malaysia (N Borneo) and Timor Leste, with few additional specimens collected by Johannes Elias Teijsmann and belonging to FI-HB as well. The collection also includes, due to historical reasons, those specimens which had been provisionally identified as fungi (lichens excluded), even if they then turned out to represent different organisms (insects gall, lichens and others).

Ercole Turati's ornithological collection, donated in 1884 to the Natural History Museum in Milan, included more than 20,000 specimens. The Picidae were well represented in the collection and included Alfred Malherbe's woodpeckers (1200 specimens acquired in 1860), at the time one of the most important collections of this family in the World. In 1943, after an air-raid, Turati's collection was reduced to less than 1,700 specimens, of which woodpeckers still represent an important part (230 specimens).

One of the most important historical collections of the Natural History Museum of Florence is undoubtedly that of Camillo Rondani (1808-1879). ISPRA-CBM is a collection of over 1000 specimens belonging to polychaetes, mollusks, crustaceans and echinoderms and sampled in the soft sediments of the marine and coastal Italian environments by the Research group of Laboratory of Benthic Ecology of the Environmental Institute for Protection and Research (ISPRA). The present marine macrozoobenthic dataset contains a selection of 139 specimens belonging to polychaete annelids (63), mollusks (25), crustaceans (40) and echinoderms (11) stored in labeled vials and preserved in ethanol. The dataset covers the whole Italian marine waters (Mediterranean Sea).

The Ermanno Quaggiotto malacology collection, donated by himself in 2014 to the Natural History and Archaeological Museum of Vicenza, consists of 3,614 specimens of terrestrial and freshwater mollusks, divided into 548 inventory numbers. The collection is primarily local (Veneto region, NE Italy), given that most of the specimens were collected in the provinces of Vicenza and Verona, and dates between 1972 and 2003. The collection is inventoried and cataloged. The specimens have appropriate data regarding the locality and date of collection. Specimens are stored in plastic bags placed inside seven cardboard boxes.

Anonymous herbarium. Organised in two large folders of unbound sheets between hardpapers, according to the Tournefort system. The first contains 843 numbered specimens of angiosperms only. In the second there are the others 826, also including 31 lichens, 1 alga, 52 bryophytes, 24 pteridophytes and 11 gymnosperms. Here, the numbering continues up to 1510, again beginning with angiosperms and then moving on to the other groups; this numbered series is then followed by a second series of ‘addenda’ given in the opening manuscript and referring mostly to angiosperms. The wording "herbarium vivum" is given in the heading.

Life evolution is a selection of fossils arranged to tell the evolution of life and landscape in the Agno valley (north-eastern Italy) along almost 3,000,000 years. They are part of the historical collection “Domenico Dal Lago”, consisting of more than 12,000 (mainly) fossil specimens, donated in 1929 by Domenico Dal Lago himself to the Valdagno Municipality. Unfortunately the original Dal Lago's catolgue was lost, but some specimens have data regarding collection locality.

The IPSP-FTC dataset includes plant pathogenic fungi causing diseases on forest and urban trees. Fungi were isolated from plant material of various origin, and were characterized by their pathogenicity on plant species. The accessions are maintained in vitro on artificial substrates, in refrigerators at -4°C in glass tubes or at -20 °C in glycerol, or as spores and conidia on vegetal material. Strains are available for research purposes.

The current dataset includes 516 accessions (clones) from the CNR-IBBA duckweed collection. This collection primarily consists of clones from the historical Landolt Duckweed Collection, which was previously housed in Zurich (https://www.duckweed.ch/?lang=en). The identity of some Lemna species has been validated or revised using molecular methods, specifically Tubulin-based Polymorphism (TBP). The entire plants are maintained in axenic culture following subcloning and sterilization with sodium hypochlorite (NaClO).

The ISA01-CC dataset includes about 300 strains of lactic acid bacteria and 400 strains of yeasts. The strains are mainly isolated from the Mediterranean agro-food systems and typical fermented foods (sourdough, dairy products, wine and grape, cereals, whey) and human faeces. The main species collected among lactic acid bacteria are: Levilactobacillus brevis, Companilactobacillus alimentarius, Leuconostoc pseudomesenteroides, Fructilactobacillus sanfranciscensis, Lacticaseibacillus casei, Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus, etc. The main species collected among yeasts are Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Hanseniaspora guilliermondii, H. uvarum, Pichia kudriavzevii, Met. fructicula.

Tissue and DNA samples from more that 500 individuals of Pinus heldreichii var. leucodermis from the italian range of the species (Basilicata and Calabria, Southern Italy). Needles have been collected from georeferenced, individual trees in the forest, transported to the lab and kept at -80 °C for long-term storage. DNA has been extracted from each tissue sample for purpose of population genetic studies and evolutionary history reconstruction, and it is currently maintained at -20 *C for future research.

The dataset comprises more than 1000 progenies obtained by crosses between various cultivars of Olea europaea subsp. europaea which are maintained in clonal orchards in Central Italy (Umbria, Lazio, Toscana). Parent cultivars are kept by CNR-IBBR in Perugia, Umbria, Italy. Overall, the CNR-IBBR-PG Olive collection comprises about 1,700 different accessions, including clones and crosses of many European and extra-European varieties. The main goal is the long-term preservation of the olive biodiversity as a source of genetic material for selecting and cultivating new Olive tree varieties and cultivars with specific characteristics . Molecular identification, morphological characterization, and bio-agronomic and metabolic evaluation are currently underway.

Caenorhabditis elegans Italian collection dataset (CELITABASE-01) - Version 1.0

The frozen collection consists of over 3,000 transgenic and mutant strains of non-parasitic nematodes, Caenorhabditis elegans species, accumulated over forty years. The collection, established in the early ’80s by Dr. Paolo Bazzicalupo, is kept in triplicate, is unique in Italy, and supports numerous Italian groups. C. elegans is the only multicellular animal model that can be frozen and stabs are stable for decades.

Preservation techniques: Cryopreservation of L1 larval stage worms in 1 mL freezing solution containing NaCl 0.1M, phosphate buffer pH 6.2, Glycerol 30%. Services: Distribution of strains to the Italian C. elegans community. Local conservation of strains from CAENORHABDITIS GENETICS CENTER (CGC). Genotyping and phenotyping.

Competence / Expertise: Maintenance of C. elegans strains, Genetic crosses, Molecular biology, Anatomical methods, Neurobiology, Toxicology, Implementation of nutraceuticals, Genetic screens, Drug screens, Transgenesis.

Quality: Genotyping and phenotyping of strains before and after freezing, including viability test. The collection is maintained as triplicate copies in 2 different -80° Ultrafreezers and 1 in L.N.

The Medicinal Herb Garden (also known as "Giardino dei Semplici") is a botanic collection of more than 100 living plant species, primarily officinal and wild edible (alimurgic) plants. The collection aims to preserve local biodiversity and disseminate knowledge on botany sciences and medicinal plants. It also promotes pharmacological and phytosanitary research to deepen and apply knowledge about the biological properties of herbs and their extracts.

Medicinal and wild edible plants are conserved, whose main taxa are dicots, monocots and Ginkgoopsida. Lamiaceae, Asteraceae, Brassicaceae, Myrtaceae, Apiaceae, Caryophyllaceae, Rosaceae, and Plantaginaceae are the main represented families.

The main purposes of the collection are: preservation and cultivation; transcriptional and metabolic characterisation; active principles and essential oils extraction; biochemical characterization; pharmacological and phytochemical studies.

The ITEM Collection includes more than 13,000 strains belonging to various agro-food microorganisms with phytopathological and toxicological significance. Thousands strains belonging to toxigenic genera Aspergillus, Alternaria, Fusarium, and Penicillium, representing wide biodiversity to investigate strategies for reducing mycotoxin contamination. Also yeasts (300) and lactic bacteria (400) has been also preserved and characterized for autochthonous industrial fermentation of typical Apulian food.

The collection includes clones and seed plants of Cupressus sempervirens and 7 other species of the genus Cupressus (old world cypresses) as well as 17 species of the genus Hesperocyparis (new world cypresses), a genus of trees in the family Cupressaceae, containing North American species formerly assigned to the genus Cupressus. The collection which includes 4064 accessions, has been established since 1975 to study the response to cypress canker disease within the genus Cupressus and select resistant cypress genotypes for various uses.
